Border Security Technology Consortium

We need a total rebrand.

The Border Security Technology Consortium (BSTC) provides collaborative research and development and rapid prototyping capabilities within the border security realm. Sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the consortium supports United States Customs and Border Security. The BSTC was formed in the spring of 2012, and it was time for a much needed rebrand of the consortium. The logo (right) had many problems: the use of the map only represented the lower 48, the arrows seem to communicate imperialism, and the triangular shape in the middle came from a company that is no longer associated with BSTC. The DHS liked the shield, but that was about it (they even wanted a new name).

BSTC becomes the Homeland Security Technology Consortium. The shield was carried over from the old logo, and represents the protection that border security technologies provide. However, in addition to keeping unwanted things out of our country, border security also allows safe passage across the border. The logo represents an aperture that is open to allow things in, but also has the ability close tightly to shield and protect. The colors come directly from the government sponsor’s (DHS) logo. The new name was an option provided by the customer, and the logo from concept to final product was designed by me.

America’s Datahub Consortium

America’s Datahub Consortium (ADC) advances the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NCSES) mission by engaging in ground-breaking activities related to data access and sharing, infrastructure, and analysis across the broad landscape of the science and engineering enterprise. This consortium was formed in 2021, and needed a logo that represented their focus areas: data infrastructure, innovative analyses, data security capabilities, and developing new ways of acquiring and linking data to yield valuable insights into critical issues. Another designer came up with the concept for this logo, which was to represent the movement and transformation of data. We wanted to show a complicated concept in a simple way, without completely losing its complexity. Based on this concept, I designed the following logo. The sponsor (NCSES) asked that a full color version be created using colors from their logo, as well as a black, white, and greyscale version.
